On the Road
4:30 a.m. Wake up to beat the heat.
5:30 a.m. On the road.
5:55 a.m. Breaking Dawn. Temperature 68° f.
6:55 a.m. Sunrise with 2.9 Mi complete. As always, lol clear blue skies with not a cloud insight.
7:35 a.m. Coffee and rest stop.
We've arrived at our decision point
We have two choices:
- go the longer distance with two water stops
- shorter 2 mile distance but with no water stops
8:00 a.m. Underway again, and we are following the shorter path without water stops. The weather and trail conditions are looking good so far.
9:00 a.m. Doing some quick math calculations.
Had we taken the detour into the two towns for water stops and resupply, we would have added about 25% more walking distance.
Pythagorean's theorem says our shorter path is sqrt(1^2 + 3^2) = sqrt ( 10 ) = 3.1, while our longer path is 1 + 3 = 4.
In the path with water stops, our walking distance would have been four units whereas staying to the canal Imperial, we're covering about three units of distance.
That is a 25% savings in distance walked.
Further, the disadvantages of the path with water stops are:
- asphalt roads
- very limited tree cover
Along the canal we have:
- a dirt trail service road
- fairly adequate trees providing shade
It is a no-brainer to skip the water supply routes. We are carrying enough extra water to take the shorter route without water supplies.
10:30 a.m. Almost to our departure point from the Camino to Buñuel for the night. Current temperature is 77° but 0% cloud cover.
11:15 a.m. Lucky break. Came across a sign indicating a shortcut to Buñuel. It did not appear in Google Maps.
This will save another mile.
So today's going to come in it a little over 12 Mi instead of a little under 15 Mi.
11:30 a.m. Shoes and socks off break. At a nice little roadside park.
11:50 a.m. Back on the road for the final push to the hostel. About 1 mile.
Half hour earlier start at 5:30 a.m. made a lot of difference. Cooler temperatures for much longer for much of the day. A lot of tree cover for shade along the Canal Imperial de Aragon. Again, huge difference. Temperatures through the hike were in the '70s, and with all the shade, it just felt cooler. Overall, a great hiking day.
Meaningful Moment
Finalizing Things
Tonight we discovered that reservations are tight at our remaining over-nighters.
So we worked the phone numbers and the web sites to get lodging for the rest of the Camino. So the schedule is set to get to Logroño, and celebrate our Camino.
Random Thought of the Day
Adapting to the weather
Today was one of those days where we did the first half of a stage that we planned to break in two yesterday.
The official distance for today's stage is approximately 36 km or just about 22 mi.
The goal would have been Tudela in the autonomous community of Navarre.
That is simply impossible in 90 plus Fahrenheit weather
So we are here in Buñuel because it is roughly in the middle of the official stage, taking 2 days instead.
Buñuel is off the Camino, but that's okay.
Community Social Center
Unsurprising that the community pool is the place to be on a 94f evening. They're are many, many people here eating, drinking, playing, swimming and just hanging out. It replaces the plazas for the evening community group hangout.
And the public pool facility has a cooling mister spray in the eating area.
Breaking dawn outside of Gallur
Hills of Gallur in the early morning
Canal Imperial - Our path for most of the day
Trying to capture the flower and the countryside
I found the reflection of the windmill interesting
Parroquia de Santa Ana
Much of the town has a new feeling,
as obviously does the church.
