On the Road

5:00 a.m. Wake up
6:00 a.m. On the road.

First day of hiking with the backpack.

Super challenging weather day. Stepping outside of our hotel, it was already warm. And the sun on the asphalt roads was nothing but a beatdown. After 10 Mi, called the taxi with 6 Mi to go.
11:00 a.m. Called for a taxi
12:00 p.m. Checked into the Agusti Hostal.
3:00 p.m. Went out for a bite to eat. For me, gambas al ajillo ( shrimp grilled in olive oil and garlic ). Then stopped by the local supermarket to get stuff for breakfast tomorrow.
4:00 p.m. Headed down to the port to take a look around. Stopped to get an ice cream on the way. Melted so fast that I had to treat it like an ice cream cone even though it was in a cup LOL.
7:00 p.m. Back in the town square for dinner. Perfect way to end the night.

10:45 p.m. Power goes out not only in the building but in the entire barrio .
10:55 p.m. power restored to our side of street. Hope it is not a regular occurrence thru out the night.

Meaningful Moment

Reaching the hostel, and physically beat. I'm quite frankly surprised because I thought I was in better shape.
It's only 85 out, but it feels so much hotter. Humidity seems to be high and there's not much wind.
I have to believe that part of the issue is still adjusting to the time zone changes between New York State and Spain.
And needing a few days to adjust to the physical demand of hiking in this sun and heat.

Deb and I went to the plaza mayor for a light dinner.
It was a a good meal, not only because the food was good, but more importantly, because the weather had eased up. We were able to sit comfortably in the plaza and enjoy our green salad with tuna and our chiparonis which are deep fried small squid.
We finished with desserts. I had a kind of nut cake and Deb had a meringue.
This is what I most enjoy about the Camino: being able to sit in the town square and take in all that cultural ambiance which is so different from America.
The town square is for the community to get together.
No sitting around the TV.

Random Thought of the Day

Dinner last night

Sitting in a restaurant in Europe is so easy. Last night Deb and I walked into the restaurant at the Hotel Delta at 8:00 p.m., and we left after 9:30.

We had a nice chance to talk with absolutely no pressure whatsoever to eat and get out. Very Spanish.

Favorite thought

Deb asked me what my favorite part of today was.

I had to answer that we hung in there longer than expected, given the all-asphalt-day under the sun in the humidity.

We could have thrown in the towel sooner - respectably.

Leaving Deltebre

On the road

This picture is emblematic of everything about the day. An asphalt paved road stretching out into the distance, seemingly without end; bright brilliant Sun glaring down from the blue skies; and a temperature bordering on the '90s already.

La Rapita

Up for ice cream and a walk to the port in the heat

Port of La Rapita

Parroquia la Santísima Trinitat

While Deb and I were having dinner, the mass ended and the church procession went down the plaza.
